Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Armjive

Move 2 = Side to Side

Move 3 = Step Across

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Swizzle Arm Turn = Step back with a double handhold. Men step in to the right as you look at your lady, raising your left hand & lowering your right to make your lady step forwards turning to her right. Both continue to swap sides, ladies turning to their right & men to their left – to face (but across a diagonal) as men extend your left hand out to the left at shoulder level – you should now be in a swizzle position with the lady’s left arm behind her back in a half nelson. Men let step forwards & turn ¼ turn to your right to face your lady, as you lightly throw and let go with your left hand underneath your right arm, also let go with your right arm behind the lady’s back as she steps forwards, so you are now just right forearm to right forearm. Men raise your right arm to turn your lady clockwise with just your forearm, as you both continue to swap sides back onto the side you started from. Both face sliding and catching with your right hand. Return like a Comb. Step back to face, sliding and catching man’s left to lady’s right.

Move 2 = Yoyo Shoulder Drop = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Yoyo. Men take a step to your right, as you take your right hand over your head and lower the lady’s hand onto your left shoulder. Men step forwards offering your left hand behind you so that you back catch man’s left to lady’s right. Men step back as you raise your left hand up and out to the left (careful with your elbow), so the ladies step in underneath your raised left arm starting to turn to their left. Men take another step back as you lower your hands to bring the ladies round to face in an anti-clockwise direction.

Move 3 = First Move Shoulder Pivot = Step back man’s left to lady’s right. Both step in to the left as you look at your partner & men place their right hand onto the lady’s nearest (right) shoulder. Men let go with your left hand & step forwards to swap sides, turning to your right to face your lady, as whilst keeping your right hand on the lady’s right shoulder – you push with your right hand to make your lady pivot ½ turn to her right & step back to face on the opposite side. Men keeping your right hand on the lady’s right shoulder – you pull with your right hand to make your lady step forwards pivoting ½ turn anti-clockwise, as the man steps into the left – only just past the lady, whilst facing her the whole time – you should end up at a right angle to each other with the man’s right hand still on the lady’s right shoulder, with the man’s right arm across the lady’s shoulders, behind her neck – men also offer your left hand out in front of the lady at waist level & ladies take hold with your right hand. Men raise your left hand as you push and let go with your right arm to make the ladies step forward under the man’s left arm. Men lower your left hand to bring your lady clockwise round to face. Return. Step back.
