Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Wurlitzer

Move 2 = Yoyo

Move 3 = Half Windmill

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Catapult Half Nelson

Move 2 = Armjive Windmill = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Armjive. Men raise your left hand to turn your lady clockwise in front of you. As your lady comes round to face, men lower your left hand down to waist level and turn to your right, on the halfbeat whilst your back is facing your lady transfer her hand from your left to your right behind your back at waist level. Men continue to turn to your right to face your lady, as whilst being careful with your right elbow – raise your right hand to turn your lady for a second time in a clockwise direction. Step back to face. Return like a Comb. Step back sliding & catching Man’s left to Lady’s right.

Move 3 = Pretzel Walk Around Combo = Men step back signaling for a normal Pretzel – man’s left to lady’s right, with man’s right hand offered behind his back in a half nelson. Both step in, men raising your left hand over the lady’s head as the ladies take hold of the man’s offered hand behind his back. Pass back to back, men lowering your left hand to waist level as you raise your right hand over the lady’s head and then lower it in front of the ladies at waist level. Both walk round in a clockwise direction for 2 beats. Men let go with your left hand behind your back as you raise your right hand to turn your lady 1 & ¼ turns clockwise. When the ladies come round to face, men flick your right hand across to the right at waist level – keeping hold to wrap your lady anti-clockwise into a Basket – ladies take your right arm over your left as you wrap in. Men pull with your with your right hand at waist level & then push your right hand around your lady at waist level to make your lady turn 1 & ½ turns clockwise & men offer your left hand behind your back – ladies turn 1 & ½ turns clockwise and when you’re side on to your man with your left arm behind your back, take hold of the man’s right hand behind his back with your right hand. Both walk round in a clockwise direction for another 2 beats. Men side step to your right behind your lady as you let go with your right hand & extend your left hand out to the left at waist level to lead your lady forwards behind you. Men take another step back to face as you pull & let go with your left hand at waist level to spin your lady clockwise. Catch right to right. Return. Step back.

Move 4 = Yoyo Counter Lean = Step back right to right. Step in like a normal Yoyo, men taking your right hand across your chest and up near your left shoulder, but change your grip here so yours & your lady’s right thumbs are interlocked like an arm wrestlers grip, with your fingers wrapped round the back of your partners hand. Keeping this grip, men take a small step behind your lady with your right foot, as you extend your right hand out to the right to make your lady pivot half a turn clockwise like a normal Yoyo. Men put your weight over your right foot and pivot ¾ turn clockwise, as you pull with your right hand at chest height to make your lady pivot a ¼ turn anti-clockwise & as you both face the same way – men deftly slide your left foot alongside & up against your lady’s right foot & place your left hand (thumb to the floor) on the lady’s right hip – you should both be side by side facing the same way, with the lady to the man’s left, right hand to right hand still with the arm wrestlers grip & the outside of the man’s left foot alongside & up against the outside of the lady’s right foot. Next – the lean – Men leave your left foot where it is as you side step to the right with your right foot, leaning to your right (counterbalancing your lady), as you gently push and let go with your left hand on the lady’s hip, whilst extending your right hand across towards your lady – Ladies – You can either keep your right foot where it is & mirror your man by side stepping to the left with your left foot (supporting yourself as you lean to the left), or ladies keep their feet together, keep a strong core and try and keep your body straight from head to toe and lean to the left only supported by the man – which ever lean the lady chooses, it takes two beats to slowly and in a controlled way lean away. Then men pull with your right hand to both stand up vertical again, men take your left foot away from your lady’s foot & out of her way as you bring your right hand up into a Yoyo type ‘L’ shape as the man begins to step to the left behind the lady to begin to swap sides. Men continue to swap sides as you push and raise your right hand to turn your lady clockwise. Face. Return. Step back.
