Basingstoke, Monday 30th April 2018

Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Basket

Move 2 = Manspin

Move 3 = Yoyo Pushspin

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Neckbreak

Move 2 = Catapult Wrap back = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Catapult. Men step forwards and lean forwards as you would do normally, but do not offer your spare hand out behind you. Men step back turning to your left, bending your right arm into a half nelson behind your back, before letting go & latching the lady’s hand on to your hip and raise both hands in a big arc over the lady’s head – ladies step forwards watching your man as you change sides, allowing your right hand to run around the man’s waist as he turns. Men once you have completed one whole turn, step back sliding and catching man’s left to lady’s right having swapped sides. Return. Step back.

Move 3 = Throwaway Slidebreak = Step back with a double handhold. Bounce into the left hand side of your partner (as you look at them), and then back out. Bounce into the right hand side of your partner, and then back out. Step into the left hand side of your partner raising both hands over you and your partner’s head – lowering the lady’s right hand behind the man’s head and the man’s right hand behind the lady’s head. Both walk round in a clockwise direction for 2 beats. Both continue to walk round clockwise for another beat as men raise their left hand back over their head. Both continue to walk round clockwise for a final beat as men throw their left hand away underneath their right arm – letting go of the lady’s right hand. Ladies turn to your left, as men turn to your right to face each other, men thrust your right hand down and out to the right at waist level to make your lady turn an extra half turn to her left, wrapping into a Basket position (ladies make sure you take your right hand over your left arm as you wrap in). Men cradle your lady backwards as per a normal Basket.

Move 4 = Basket Flip Turn = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Basket. Men cradle your lady forwards as normal, but as you do – raise your left hand (with the lady’s right) up onto her left shoulder. Men push with your left hand on the lady’s shoulder as you pull with your right hand at waist level to make your lady turn 1/2 turn to her right to face you. Men raise your right hand up in front of your lady and then over her head to make her turn to her left. When the ladies come round to face, men place your right hand on your left shoulder as you raise your left hand over your head and start turning 1 whole turn to your right underneath – whilst you turn, when your back is facing your lady – you will need to let go with your right hand. Men come round to face your lady and collect her in a First Move position with your left hand up near your left shoulder and your right hand on the lady’s left hip. This move now finishes like a First Move – Twist your lady out to the side. Up to the shoulder. Turn your lady clockwise. Face. Return. Step back.
