Winchester, Tuesday 24th April 2018

Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Basket

Move 2 = Step Across

Move 3 = Side to Side

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Side To Side Sling Spin = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Side to Side. Ladies step back out as normal, as men turn half a turn to your right so you end up with your left arm in a half nelson behind your back. Men take a side step to your right behind your lady as you pull and extend your left hand out to your left at waist level to make your lady step forwards behind you to swap sides. Men pull back letting go with your left hand at waist level to spin your lady in a clockwise direction. Catch man’s left to lady’s right. Return. Step back.

Move 2 = Catapult Push = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Catapult. Men let go with your right hand and go to spin the ladies but do not let go with your left hand, as the lady’s back comes round to face you – place your right hand onto the lady’s right shoulder blade and push away. Ladies turn to your left as men turn half a turn to your right and offer your spare hand out behind you and lean away from your partner in a Catapult position. Men step back to the right bringing your lady into your left hand side. From here this move finishes like a normal Catapult, men step back to your right bringing your lady into your left hand side. Spin the ladies. Catch right to right.

Move 3 = Lassooed Neckbreak = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Yoyo. Men step back as you take your right hand first between you and your partner then drawing an anti-clockwise circle over the lady’s head so she turns in an anti-clockwise direction. As the ladies come round to face men start to walk backwards around your lady ½ turn & take your right hand to out to the right at shoulder level to make your lady turn another whole turn anti-clockwise & onto the lady’s right shoulder – you should both end up facing the same way, the lady to the man’s right, right to right by the lady’s right shoulder & also catch left to left at waist level in front of the man. Men raise your left hand to turn your lady out clockwise. Face with your left hand raised & right hand low. Return – like a Comb. Slide & catch with a double handhold ready for the next move.

Move 4 = Lady’s Gate Block Spin = Step back with double handhold. Step in to the left as you look at your partner, men taking your left hand near your left hip & raising your right hand up, over & behind your lady’s head. Keeping hold with both hands in this position, both walk round for 2 beats in a clockwise direction. Men extend your left hand out in front of you (but not so far that you bend the lady’s arm the wrong way!). Men take your left hand over the top of your right arm & let go with it, as you also let go with your right hand behind your lady’s head – you should now have the first block, right forearm to right forearm. Men push down with your right arm to start turning your lady clockwise & using your right hand – catch the lady’s right wrist for the second block. Men pull and let go with your right hand at waist level to spin your lady anti-clockwise. Face and catch man’s left to lady’s right.
