Basingstoke, Monday 16th April 2018

Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = First Move Move 2 = Step Across Move 3 = Hatchback

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Basket Elbow Spin = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Basket. Men cradle your partner backwards as normal, but as you do so let go with your right hand and place the palm of your right hand around the inside of your partners right elbow. Cradle forwards. Men let go with your left hand as you nudge your partner with your right shoulder to unwrap her clockwise leaving your right hand on the ladies right elbow. As the ladies come around to face the man’s right hand should act as a block which stops you when you are facing each other. Men throw your right hand over to the right, letting go to spin your lady anti-clockwise. Catch right to right.

Move 2 = Neckbreak Pushspin = Step back man’s left to lady’s right – men signalling with your right arm in an ‘L’ shape at shoulder height. Both step in so that your partner is on your right hand side, men taking your left hand up near your left shoulder while you take your right hand over the lady’s left shoulder with your palm facing the floor so that you can see your fingertips as you look behind the lady’s head – your right hand/arm should not be in contact with the ladies at this point. Men stay on the spot as you take your left hand around in front of the ladies and transfer her right hand from your left to your right – you should end up both facing the same way with your right hand near the lady’s right shoulder. Men offer your left hand to your lady at waist level in front of you – ladies take hold with your left, as men whilst keeping hold with your right hand – raise your right arm up over the lady’s head and step forward turning to your right to face. Step back to face with a crossed handhold. Men step in to the left as you look at your lady, whilst pivoting a ¼ turn to your right to face her, as you pull with your right hand at waist level to make you lady step straight forwards & men flatten your right hand so you are palm to palm. Men continue to swap sides as you pull back and let go with both hands (but more so your right hand in a Pushspin) – to spin your lady clockwise. Catch man’s left to lady’s right. Return. Step back.

Move 3 = Shoulder Slide Walkaround = Step back right to right. Men step in to the left, turning to your left & taking the lady’s hand onto your right shoulder – ladies step straight forwards – once the man is facing the same way as the lady, men sweep your left hand back in between both of you and around behind the lady & onto her left hip. Keeping this position side by side, both rotate clockwise together for 2 beats – men walking backwards, ladies walking forwards. Men push & let go with your left arm to keep your lady walking round you, as whilst being careful with your right elbow – you raise your right hand over your head and turn to your left on the spot. As the ladies walk round behind the men, men lower your right hand down to your right hip (with your right elbow over the top of the lady’s right arm) and then offer your left hand out in front of your lady at waist level – ladies take hold with your left – you should be side by side with the lady to the man’s left, both facing the same way – keeping this position, both rotate clockwise together for another 2 beats – men walking backwards, ladies walking forwards. Men let go with your right hand, as you step back raising your left hand to turn your lady out clockwise. Face with your left hand still raised, catching right to right at waist level. Return. Step back to face, letting go with your left hand.

Move 4 = Catapult into Basket = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Catapult. Men go to spin the ladies as you would normally, but as the ladies come round to face (where you would normally let go to spin her) change hands so you are now man’s right to lady’s left and take your hand across to the left at waist level. Men pull back with your right hand – keeping hold at waist level to make your lady wrap one complete turn anti-clockwise (lady’s take your right arm over your left as you wrap in) into a Basket position. Cradle backwards – this is now the start of the routine again.
