Basingstoke, Monday 9th April 2018

Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Sway       Move 2 = Half Windmill       Move 3 = Pushspin

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = First Move Backslide = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal First Move. Men twist your lady out to the side, but step forwards on your left foot as you do so, so that you end up at a right angle to your lady. Men raise your left hand to turn your lady anti-clockwise on the spot. As the ladies come round to face – men keep your left hand raised and step underneath it turning to your left like you would in a Step Across. Men finish turning to your left as you pull down with your left hand to face. Men raise your left hand out to the right in front of you to return your lady anti-clockwise back onto the side she started from. Step back to face.

Move 2 = Armjive Nelson Flick = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Armjive. Men turn the ladies clockwise like you would normally. As the ladies come round to face, men turn half a turn to your right and lower your left hand to the right behind your back. Both take a small step to the left as men take your left hand out to the left behind you. Men throw your left hand away to the right behind you – letting go to spin the ladies in a clockwise direction, as you turn either way to face. Catch right to right. Return. Step back.

Move 3 = Hatchback Neckbreak = Step back right to right, men signalling by offering his left hand behind his back. Both step in so that your partner is on your right hand side, men take your hand across your chest and up near your left shoulder, ladies take hold of the man’s offered hand behind his back. Men take a step behind your lady as you extend your right hand out to the right at shoulder level – ladies turn to your right so you are looking over the man’s shoulder. Men raise your right hand vertically (careful with your elbow) before taking it back to the right over & behind the lady’s head & onto her right shoulder. Men pull your right hand round gently to twist the ladies slightly to her left into your body. Men let go with your left hand behind your back as you gently pull back and raise your right hand to unwrap the ladies 1 and a 1/2 turns in a clockwise direction. As the ladies come round to face, men lower your right hand to waist level and turn half a turn to your left, offering your left hand out behind you like a Catapult. This move now finishes in the same way as a Catapult – men step back to the right bringing your lady into your left hand side. Men let go with your right hand as you step back spinning the ladies in a clockwise direction. Catch man’s left to lady’s right. Return. Step back.

Move 4 = Delayed Wurlitzer = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Wurlitzer. Men keep hold with your right hand as you take it out to the right and then over the lady’s head to turn (not spin) her anti-clockwise in front of you. As the ladies come round to face, men keep hold and lower your right hand to waist level as you turn a quick 3/4 turn to your left (your right arm is now in a half nelson behind your back) and offer your left hand to your lady over the top of her left arm – ladies take hold with their right. Men turn to your right on the spot to face away from your lady as you take your left hand over your head. Men take a small step back to the left, as you lower and let go with your left hand whilst you pull & raise your right hand in front of your lady (careful with your elbow) & then over her head – to turn the ladies in a clockwise direction. When the ladies come round to face, men take your right hand out to the left at waist level. Men throw your right hand out to the right at waist level – letting go to spin the ladies in an anti-clockwise direction. Catch man’s left to lady’s right and step back to face.
