Basingstoke, Monday 26th March 2018

Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Shoulder Slide       Move 2 = Octopus       Move 3 = Armjive

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Catapult Step Across = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Catapult. Both lean away from each other as you would do normally, but as you do so – men transfer the ladies right hand from your right hand to your left behind your back. Men take a step back to the right as you pull and raise your left hand out to the left (being careful with your elbow), to make the ladies step forwards underneath and start turning to their left to face. Men do not take another step back, instead keep your left hand raised, take a side step diagonally to your left in front of the ladies and underneath her arm like a Step Across. This move now finishes exactly like a normal Step Across – continue to swap sides, men turning to their left as they swing their left hand down to waist level to make the lady turn to their right to face. Return. Step back.

Move 2 = Wurlitzer Block = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Wurlitzer. Men sweep your right hand up out to the right and then over the lady’s head to turn her in an anti-clockwise direction. As the lady comes round to face, men lower you hand to waist level and then pivot 1 whole turn anti-clockwise to face your lady again & offer your flat left palm to your lady – ladies place your right palm on the man’s – the man’s right arm is behind his back. Men let go of your right hand behind your back, as you push and raise your left hand to turn your lady clockwise. Face. Return. Step back.

Move 3 = Neckbreak First Move (2) = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Neckbreak. Men once you have swayed your lady forwards in the Neckbreak position, Men push forwards you’re your left hand at waist level & both step forwards turning to your right. Both keep turning to your right until you end up with the lady to the man’s left, his left arm behind the lady’s back with his left hand by the lady’s left hip, and men raise your right hand to take the lady’s right arm over and behind your head. Men let go with your right hand, push and let go with your left hand behind your lady’s back to make her step forwards turning to her right to face you, as you step forward turning to your left to face her. Men take hold of your lady’s right hand with your left & twist your lady out to the side like a First Move. This move now finishes like a First Move – Men bring your left hand back up to your shoulder. Turn the ladies clockwise. Face. Return. Step back.

Move 4 = Armjive Swizzle, Wiggle & Spin = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Armjive. Men keep hold with both hands, keeping the right hand at waist level as you raise your left hand to turn your lady in a clockwise direction. When the ladies come round to face again – men take your left hand out to the left at shoulder level for the swizzle, the lady’s left arm should be behind her back in a half nelson. Men take your left hand back in between you & your lady, then over her head to turn her in an anti-clockwise direction. When the ladies come round to face, men drop your left elbow to point to the floor & take your left hand over your head, as you turn half a turn to your right on the spot so your back is facing your lady and lower your left hand down near your right hip. Both wiggle on the spot for 2 beats. Men let go with your left hand, side step to your right as you pull with your right hand at waist level to make your lady step forwards into your left hand side. Men step back and to the left as you pull back with your right hand at waist level, and then take your right hand across to the left at waist level to prepare the lady for a spin just like a Wurlitzer. Men pull back and let go with your right hand at waist level to spin your lady in an anti-clockwise direction. Catch right to right.
