Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = First Move       Move 2 = Step Across       Move 3 = Hatchback

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Basket Pull Under = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Basket. Men raise your left hand to unwrap your lady as normal. Men keep your left hand raised, as you now throw your right hand away underneath your raised left arm past your left hip – letting go to make your lady turn an extra half turn to her right, as you step forwards to the right beginning to swap sides. Men continue to swap sides as you turn to your left to face your lady, pulling your left hand down to bring your lady round to face. Return. Step back.

Move 2 = Hip Swizzle Walkaround = Both step back man’s left to lady’s right, men offering your right hand in a half nelson position behind your back. Both step in, men, raise your left arm to make the ladies step underneath and start turning to their right, as you take your offered right hand away before your lady has a chance to grab it, then turn to your left and place your right hand onto the lady’s nearest (right) hip. Step back to face having swapped sides, men extending your left hand out to the left at shoulder level. Men, keep your right hand in contact with your lady behind her back, as you raise your left hand back in between you and your lady to return her in an anti-clockwise direction as you step back onto the side that you started from – collecting her in a First Move position. Both walk round in a clockwise direction for 2 beats. Men walk round for 1 more beat as you pull and let go with your right hand on your lady’s hip, whilst raising your left hand to turn her out clockwise. Face. Return. Step back to face.

Move 3 = Neckbreak Unwind = Step back man’s left to lady’s right – men signalling with your right arm in an ‘L’ shape at shoulder height. Both step in so that your partner is on your right hand side, men taking your left hand up near your left shoulder while you take your right hand over the lady’s left shoulder with your palm facing the floor so that you can see your fingertips as you look behind the lady’s head – your right hand/arm should not be in contact with the ladies at this point. Men stay on the spot as you take your left hand down towards the lady’s hip & across in front of her at waist level to make her twist out to the side like a First Move Lady’s step back on your right) – and as the lady now faces the same way, men with your right hand tap your lady on her right shoulder – ladies take hold with your left hand. Men push with your right arm to twist your lady forwards slightly to her left. Men let go with your left hand, as you now pull back and raise your right hand to unwrap your lady 1 & ½ turns clockwise to face – men taking your right hand across to the left at waist level in preparation to wrap your lady. Men flick your right hand across to the right at waist level to wrap the lady anti-clockwise into a Basket – men take hold of the lady’s right hand with your left. Men let go with your right hand and step forwards, swapping sides, turning to your right to face , and sliding and catching with your right hand so you step back to face with a double handhold ready for the next move.

Move 4 = Wurlipult Hip Pull = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Wurlitzer. Men step in to the left as you look at your lady, while you pull down and raise with your right hand as you would in a Catapult to make the ladies step forwards turning to their left under your arm. Men take another step forward, lowering your right hand to waist level & pivot ¼ turn to your left so your right arm is in a half nelson behind your back & touch the fingertips of your left hand (with thumb up) against the lady’s left hip. Men pull and let go with your right hand behind your back to make your lady step straight forwards without turning, as men turn to their left and walk round behind the lady placing both their hands on both the lady’s hips (left on left, right on right) – the man should be stood directly behind the lady now. Men step in to the right of your lady as you pull back with both hands to make the lady step straight back. As the man passes past the lady’s right hand side, slide and catch man’s left to lady’s right. Travelling return. Step back.
