Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Basket       Move 2 = Manspin       Move 3 = Teapot

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Catapult Cleaver = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Catapult. Men step forwards and lean forwards as normal but offer your left hand over your right shoulder. Men step back to the left, pulling with your right hand at waist level to bring your lady into your right hand side – ladies take hold of the man’s offered hand by his shoulder. Men take another step back as you pull with your right hand at waist level to start turning your lady anti-clockwise in front of you, as she comes round to face men raise your right hand to meet your left to turn your lady another whole turn in an anti-clockwise direction. When your lady comes round to face, men turn slightly to your right and take your right hand over behind your head – as you take your left hand over behind your lady’s head. Let go with both hands and step away from each other sliding and catching man’s left to lady’s right.

Move 2 = Travelling Block Turn = Step back Man’s left to Lady’s right. Men step in to swap sides, as if to perform a travelling return, by pulling your left hand to lead the lady across – but on the halfbeat, once the lady is halfway across, men change hands so you are now right to right (men with your right elbow dropped to block your lady). Men push and raise your right hand to turn your lady clockwise, as you both continue to swap sides. Step back to face. Return. Step back.

Move 3 = Sway Flip Flop First = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Sway. Men nudge the ladies across to the left in front of you as you step to your right behind her. Men pull with your right hand at waist level to make your lady side step to her right back into a Sway position – on the halfbeat as the men step to the left into a Sway position, men place your left hand underneath the lady’s left forearm & flick the lady’s left arm up into the air. Men immediately let go with your right hand, but allow it to slide round the lady’s back, as you quickly step underneath the lady’s arm you’ve thrown in the air and quickly walk round in front of her and collect her in a First Move position by taking hold of her right hand with your left by your left shoulder and placing your right hand on the lady’s left hip. Just like a First Move now – twist the ladies out to the side. Back up to the shoulder. To the ladies clockwise. Face. Return. Step back.

Move 4 = Swizzle Slidebreak = Step back with a double handhold. Men step in to the left to begin to swap sides as whilst keeping hold with both hands, you take your left hand down towards the lady’s right hip, while you take your right hand up and out to the right over the lady’s head to start making her turn to her left. Continue to swap sides, men turning to your right to face your lady, lady’s keep turning to their left and as they come round to face men take your right hand out to the right at shoulder level (the lady’s right arm should now be behind her back in a half nelson). Men take a very small step forwards as you pivot a ¼ turn to your left to face your lady, whilst taking your right hand onto the lady’s left shoulder. Men keep hold with both hands, as you push with your right hand on the lady’s shoulder, whilst gently pulling with your left hand to make your lady pivot half a turn clockwise & the man pivots another ¼ turn anti-clockwise – you should end up side by side facing opposite directions, your partner to your right, with the man’s right arm behind the lady’s neck with his right hand still by the lady’s left shoulder. Men raise your left hand to take your lady’s right arm up & over behind your head so you should now both be in a Slidebreak Walkaround position. This move now finishes just like a Slidebreak Walkaround – both keep this position as you both walkaround clockwise for 2 beats. Both let go with your hands as you walkaround for 1 final beat stepping away from each other sliding and catching right to right. Return. Step back.
