Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Octopus       Move 2 = Catapult       Move 3 = Hatchback

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = First Move Shoulder Pivot = Step back man’s left to lady’s right. Both step in to the left as you look at your partner & men place their right hand onto the lady’s nearest (right) shoulder. Men let go with your left hand & step forwards to swap sides, turning to your right to face your lady, as whilst keeping your right hand on the lady’s right shoulder – you push with your right hand to make your lady pivot ½ turn to her right & step back to face on the opposite side. Men keeping your right hand on the lady’s right shoulder – you pull with your right hand to make your lady step forwards pivoting ½ turn anti-clockwise, as the man steps into the left – only just past the lady, whilst facing her the whole time– you should end up at a right angle to each other with the man’s right hand still on the lady’s right shoulder, with the man’s right arm across the lady’s shoulders, behind her neck – men also offer your left hand out in front of the lady at waist level & ladies take hold with your right hand. Men raise your left hand as you push and let go with your right arm to make the ladies step forward under the man’s left arm. Men lower your left hand to bring your lady clockwise round to face. Return. Step back to face, changing hands ready for the next move.

Move 2 = Recurring Sway Step Across = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Sway. Men keep both your hands at waist level, and push forwards with your left hand, as you step forwards turning to your right – this turns your lady to her right in front of you, so you should be stood directly behind her facing her back. Keep both hands at waist level still, as men pull back with your right hand so you both continue to turn to your right – stepping back on the opposite side in the mirror image of a Sway with the ladies to the man’s left. Men pull across to the right at waist level & then let go with your right hand, to make your lady side step to her right, as you men – step to the left behind your lady, raise your left hand and step forward under your lady’s arm like a Step Across (men your left arm needs to be bent) turning to your left. Men continue to swap sides turning to your left like a Step Across & as you face sweep your left hand down to waist level & across to the left in preparation to spin the lady. Men throw your left hand across to the right at waist level – letting go to spin your lady in an anti-clockwise direction. Catch man’s left to lady’s right.

Move 3 = Mirrored Catapult Wrap = Step back man’s left to lady’s right. Step in as the man pulls down and then raises his left hand out to the left, to make the ladies turn to their right underneath. Men take another step forward and offer your spare hand out behind you at waist level – ladies take hold (ladies should have a crossed handhold). Men let go with your left hand as you take a step back to your left, extending your right hand out to the right at waist level – to bring your lady into your right hand side. Men pull back at waist level and keep hold with your right hand to wrap your lady anti-clockwise into a Basket position – men offer your left hand to your lady in front of her – ladies take hold. Men raise your left hand to unwrap your lady. Face. Return. Step back.

Move 4 = Cross Wrap & Basket = Both step back with a double handhold. Men, pull and raise both hands up and to your left to begin to turn your ladies clockwise past your left hand side. Continue to swap sides and step back to face with a crossed handhold. Men step in to the left as you look at your lady whilst sliding your right hand up the lady’s right arm & on to her shoulder, as you raise your left hand out to the right to wrap the lady into a shoulder Basket. Cradle backwards & then forwards. Men let go with your left hand as you pull back and raise your right hand to unwrap your lady 1 & ½ turns clockwise. Face and prepare like a Wurlitzer. Men spin your lady anti-clockwise. Catch man’s left to lady’s right.
