Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Basket       Move 2 = Teapot       Move 3 = Side to Side

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Throw Away Step Across = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Step Across. Continue to swap sides, men pull down with your left elbow as you turn to your left to face your lady and throw your left hand out to the left at waist level – letting go to spin the ladies in a clockwise direction. Catch man’s left to lady’s right. Return. Step back.

Move 2 = Basket Elbow Spin = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Basket. Men cradle your partner backwards as normal, but as you do so let go with your right hand and place the palm of your right hand around the inside of your partners right elbow. Cradle forwards. Men let go with your left hand as you nudge your partner with your right shoulder to unwrap her clockwise leaving your right hand on the ladies right elbow. As the ladies come around to face the man’s right hand should act as a block which stops you when you are facing each other. Men throw your right hand over to the right, letting go to spin your lady anti-clockwise. Catch right to right.

Move 3 = Catapult Wrap Round = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Catapult. Men step forward & lean forwards but do not offer your left hand out behind you. Men keep hold with your right hand at waist level as you raise your left hand nice & high over your lady’s head (careful with your elbow!) while stepping back to the right turning half a turn to your left – wrapping yourself into your lady’s right arm – you should end up stood side by side with your partner on your right facing the opposite way, with the man’s right arm in a half nelson behind his back – men place your left hand onto your lady’s upper right arm to keep the position. Both walk round in this position clockwise for 2 beats. Men take your left hand off your lady’s arm as you turn to your right unwrapping 1 whole turn clockwise in front of your lady – keeping your right hand at waist level. Men as you come round to face your lady, take your right hand across to the right at waist level & wrap your lady into a Sway – this is the start of the next move…

Move 4 = Swirling Sway = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Sway. Men keep hold with both hand as you nudge the ladies forwards while you take a step back and lean away from each other so you are in a Catapult position albeit with the men behind the ladies rather than in front. Men keep your left hand low as you step in to the left of your lady, raising your right hand over her head. Men keep your left hand low as you step round in front of your lady, raising your right hand over your head as you turn to your right to face. Men keep your left hand low as you keep turning to your right an extra whole turn – as you come round to face your lady (men your left arm should be in a half nelson behind your back) lower your right hand at the same time as bending at the waist and ducking under your lady’s outstretched left arm (really relaxed left handhold required!). Men keep hold with both hands, slide your left hand off your back, then stand up raising both hands together to turn your lady anti-clockwise. When your lady comes round to face, men turn slightly to your right and take your right hand over behind your head – as you take your left hand over behind your lady’s head. Let go with both hands and step away from each other sliding and catching man’s left to lady’s right.
