Winchester, Tuesday 14th November 2017

Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Wurlitzer       Move 2 = Yoyo       Move 3 = Half Windmill

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Wurlitzer Basket Spinners = Step back with a double handhold. Step in like a Wurlitzer and men raise and flatten your left hand at shoulder height, but as you step in – step in to the left, so your partner is to your right. Men step forward to swap sides, turning to your right to face your lady as you push down and let go with your left hand to turn your lady out ¾ of a turn clockwise – so you should’ve prepared your lady just like a normal Wurlitzer – just swapped sides at the same time too. Men keep hold with your right hand as you flick it across to the right at waist level to wrap your lady anti-clockwise into a Basket – men take hold of the lady’s offered right hand with your left. Just like a normal Basket – cradle backwards & then forwards. Men raise your left hand to unwrap your lady. As your lady comes round to face, men keep your left hand raised & throw your right hand across to the left at waist level – letting go to spin your lady clockwise. When the ladies come round to face, men keep your left hand raised and catch man’s right to lady’s left at waist level. Men keep your left hand raised as you now prepare your lady for a second spin by taking both hands across to the right just a few inches (left hand raised – right hand at waist level). Men keep your left hand raised & throw your right hand across to the left at waist level – letting go to spin your lady clockwise. When the ladies come round to face, men lower your left hand to waist level. Return. Step back to face.

Move 2 = Throw Away Step Across = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal Step Across. Continue to swap sides, men pull down with your left elbow as you turn to your left to face your lady and throw your left hand out to the left at waist level – letting go to spin the ladies in a clockwise direction. Catch man’s left to lady’s right. Return. Step back.

Move 3 = Sway Flip Flop First = Beats 1, 2, 3 & 4 as per a normal Sway. Men nudge the ladies across to the left in front of you as you step to your right behind her. Men pull with your right hand at waist level to make your lady side step to her right back into a Sway position – on the halfbeat as the men step to the left into a Sway position, men place your left hand underneath the lady’s left forearm & flick the lady’s left arm up into the air. Men immediately let go with your right hand, but allow it to slide round the lady’s back, as you quickly step underneath the lady’s arm you’ve thrown in the air and quickly walk round in front of her and collect her in a First Move position by taking hold of her right hand with your left by your left shoulder and placing your right hand on the lady’s left hip. This is now the start of the next move…

Move 4 = First Move Jump = Step back man’s left to lady’s right with men signaling by tapping their right hand on their right shoulder. Step in like a normal First Move. Men twist the ladies out to the side as you would do normally, but as you do so you must prepare for the lady’s jump, men face your left palm to the ceiling and take your right hand around behind the lady’s waist and onto her right hip, ladies place your left hand onto the man’s right shoulder; both bend your knees & make sure you have enough space to do the move safely. Ladies push down with both your hands using your man as support as you jump forwards turning 1/2 turn to your left turning to face your man, men guide the ladies with your right arm while supporting her and keep hold with your left hand. Ladies land to face the men, and both step back man’s left hand to lady’s right hand. Travelling Return. Step back.
