Please note that these Modern Jive move descriptions are intended to be used as a memory jogger for those who attended the dance class rather than a training aid for learning the moves from scratch. Much more in-depth move descriptions and videos are available in the Dance Yourself Dizzy Members Area.

Beginner Moves

Move 1 = Basket       Move 2 = Wurlitzer       Move 3 = Shoulder Slide

Intermediate Moves

Move 1 = Crossed Armjive = Step back man’s right to lady’s right, men offering their left hand underneath. Both step in as the men pull back with their left elbow and push with their right – this should make the men turn to their left and the ladies turn to their right. Men pull back with your right elbow, making both of you pivot to face the opposite direction. Men pull back with your left elbow again, making both of you pivot to face the opposite direction again. Men take both hands out to the right at waist level in preparation to spin the ladies. Men throw both hands together out to the left at waist level – letting go to spin the ladies in a clockwise direction. Catch. Return. Step back.

Move 2 = Recurring Sway (Variation) = Beats 1, 2 & 3 as per a normal Sway. Men keep both your hands at waist level, and push forwards with your left hand, as you step forwards turning to your right – this turns your lady to her right in front of you, so you should be stood directly behind her facing her back. Keep both hands at waist level still, as men pull back with your right hand so you both continue to turn to your right – stepping back on the opposite side in the mirror image of a Sway with the ladies to the man’s left. Men nudge the ladies across to the right in front of you as you step to your left behind her, the ladies should now be back in a normal Sway position. Men Sway your lady backwards as normal as per beat 3. Men keep both your hands at waist level, and push forwards with your left hand, as you step forwards turning to your right – this turns your lady to her right in front of you, so you should be stood directly behind her facing her back. Keep both hands at waist level still, as men pull back with your right hand so you both continue to turn to your right – stepping back on the side you started in the mirror image of a Sway with the ladies to the man’s left. Men nudge the ladies across to the right in front of you as you step to your left behind her, the ladies should now be back in a normal Sway position. Men Sway your lady backwards as normal as per beat 3. Men raise your left hand to turn your lady clockwise. Face with your left hand raised and your right hand low. Return. Step back.

Move 3 = American Shoulder Drop = Step back right to right. Both step in, men turning a quarter turn to your right taking your right hand out to the right at waist level, ladies step in turning a quarter turn to your left – men place your left hand on the lady’s left shoulder (you should now be stood behind your lady). Both continue to swap sides as men pull & raise your right hand to turn your lady clockwise. When the lady comes round to face, men drop your right elbow to point to the floor & turn half a turn to your left on the spot until your back is facing the lady, and latch the lady’s right hand onto your right shoulder. Men keep facing away from your lady, as you let go with your right hand & step forward allowing the lady’s right hand to run across your shoulders then down your outstretched left arm and back-catch man’s left to lady’s right. Men take a big step back and to the right as you pull and raise your left hand to make the ladies step forward underneath your left arm turning to her left (men make sure your left elbow is pointing to the ceiling as you do this and not at the lady’s face!). Step back to face.

Move 4 = First Move Sling Spin = Beats 1 & 2 as per a normal First Move. Men twist your lady out to the side with your left hand like you would do in a normal First Move, but take you right hand off your lady’s hip and step forward to swap sides turning 1 whole turn to your right – keeping hold with your left hand at waist level. Men once you end up in front of your lady with your back facing her – step back to the right, as you pull with your left hand at waist level – to make your lady step forwards into your left hand side. Men take another step back onto the side you started from as you pull back with your left hand at waist level – letting go to spin your lady clockwise. Catch right to right. Return. Step back.
